DOES MY PUPPY COME WITH A REGISTRATION/PAPERS?
YES! Registering your puppy with AKC is optional. However, if you choose to register your puppy, you MUST register it in the name provided by Homestead Golden Retrievers. If you change the registered name of the puppy, the guarantee will no longer be in effect. Changing the kennel of origin on a puppy's registration paperwork complicates international records of dog breeds.
DOES MY PUPPY COME WITH BREEDING RIGHTS?
Puppies come with limited AKC (no breeding rights). Breeding rights are available for a fee, however, we ask that you take great care in educating yourself PRIOR to determining to breed a dog, and only breed in an ethical fashion that furthers the magnificence of the breed.
WHAT FOOD SHOULD BE FED TO MY NEW PUPPY?
We feed Life's Abundance dog food, you can read all about it on our "Nutrition" tab. You may feed an alternative product, but guarantees made by Homestead are nullified. Should you choose an alternative formula, seek advice from your veterinarian in how best to transition to a new feeding schedule.
WHAT VACCINATIONS DO YOU GIVE?
Pups are de-wormed at 4 and 6 weeks before they leave for their new homes. We use pyrantel pamoate de-wormer, and panacur as needed. Older pups may be given a weight-based dose of pyrantel pamoate/praziquantel as needed.
We believe the 8, 12, 16 week schedule is best for vaccinating puppies. We vaccinate our pups at 8 weeks (if they are still with us and haven’t been picked up yet). We use the standard 5 way puppy vaccine, Canine Distemper-Adeovirus Type 2 –Parainfluenza –Parvovirus Vaccine, Modified live virus. We de-worm and vaccinate ourselves. Homestead allows the client to choose when to vaccinate for rabies, and recommendations vary, so please consult your preferred veterinaritan. We recommend contacting your veterinarian to see which vaccine schedule is best for your puppy and situation.
DOES MY PUPPY COME WITH A HIP AND HEALTH GUARANTEE?
YES! Please consult our Hip/Health Guarantee on the Resource page for the details.
TRAINING YOUR PUPPY
We recommend Leerburg for all of our new puppy parents. They have many free videos, articles and tutorials as well as materials for sale and they are a wonderful resource.
HOW DOES SHIPPING WORK?
Ground shipping is available once or twice a month, and you must be flexible on the delivery time as routes change. Ground shipping is $1000, door to door delivery. We have shipped many puppies and have years of experience. We have shipped to multiple countries around the world, and to every state in the US, except Hawaii (they have very stringent and lengthy quarantine requirements). We have never had a puppy harmed by either method of shipping and all have arrived safe and sound. Homestead Golden Retrievers are not responsible for accidental injury, infection, or death during transport of an animal.
DOES MY PUPPY COME FULLY TRAINED?
No. Training is an ongoing process that should last a lifetime. That said, all our puppies are thoroughly socialized to a variety of scenarios and situations, and neutralized to various types of equipment. Puppies are started on basic obedience using a reward based system beginning no later than 16 weeks of age. Puppies are transitioned to a more balanced approach by 6-8 months.
